The saga of Little Chet
In our last episode Little Chet was starting to turn the corner on the road to recovery. Little Chet was eating regularly and starting to become more self-sufficient. We got him out of his box and allowed him to have the run of the house. Here is a picture of Chet hanging out on his favorite pillow after a brief nap: ![]() But, we noticed that Little Chet's sore was really itching him. We would find Little Chet leaning against our furniture and scratching his wound like it was very irritating. If you take a real close look, you can see that Little Chets' wound was getting larger! ![]() We were concerned about seeing the wound, and decided to investigate. When we got the wound open, we found that Little Chet had been infested with maggots! It seems that a fly had laid eggs in a small 'pocket' of Little Chet's wound. When the eggs hatched, the fly larvae started to squirm around and make Little Chet's wound very irritated. We had put pest treatment on Chet's wound, but it was apparently not enough to stop the flys from laying eggs. Now, before you start to worry, fly larvae can be beneficial to a wound. Since we found the larvae within the first three days of hatching, they had eaten the dead tissue from the wound and actually cleaned it out better than we ever could have done. Once we removed all the fly larvae, it was only two days later and Chet's wound closed up and nearly went away. Here is a picture of Chet 3 days after we took out the fly larvae. Notice that his wound is small and completely closed up. ![]() Once we had Little Chet all cleaned up, he began to grow rapidly and flourish. Here are some pictures of Little Chet during his fifth week ![]() ![]() Chet loves to play in the yard. At the end of the day he retires to his favorite pillow for a nice nap. ![]() Things were starting to look promising for Little Chet. It seemed that he was going to grow up like any other pig. It seemed like he could look forward to a long happy life at the ranch. It turns out that things are never as they seem! Tune in next week for the next exiciting Chapter in the Saga of Little Chet!
